Top Five Underused Characters From the Whedonverse

Today I am bringing you my top five most underrated or underused characters in the Whedonverse shows. Joss Whedon fans are a passionate die-hard group and there will probably be fans that completely disagree with my list here. There were several characters that could have made this list, but I chose to exclude them because they did receive more love and screen time than the ones I mention below. I have to admit that this was not an easy task!

Larry Bagby as Larry Blaisdell from Buffy

Larry had some decent screen time as a Sunnydale High student. Poor Larry didn’t survive long enough to get his diploma, but I’d like to think if he had survived that we would’ve seen him more in season four. Maybe he would be working odd jobs with Xander! One of my favorite Buffy episodes was The Wish and that featured Larry as a member of the White Hats. It was great to see him fight alongside the “scoobies” from the alternate reality.

Liza Lapria as Ivy from Dollhouse

Ivy is Topher’s assistant inside the Dollhouse. It was always amusing because despite the fact she was just as qualified as him, she usually spent her time fetching his snacks and other mundane tasks. I always loved the interaction between her and Topher, but I wish her character had been used a little more. It would’ve been great to see something go horrible wrong inside the Dollhouse that required Topher and Ivy to save the day with their combined wits.

James Leary as Clem from Buffy

Clem was Spike’s buddy who also enjoyed playing poker for kittens. This friendly demon was definitely far from attractive, but always seemed to have great chemistry with the other characters. It’s unfortunate that he came so late in the series, but I hope he is off somewhere cheating at a game of cards!

Mark Lutz as Groosalugg from Angel

Groosalugg was Cordy’s love interest from the Pylea dimension who stepped aside when he realized she had feelings for Angel. I really liked Mark Lutz and his portrayal of Groo. I would’ve liked to have seen more of Groo fighting alongside Angel Investigations. He does make appearances in the comics, but would’ve been great to see more of him on the show.

Christina Hendricks as Saffron from Firefly.

Saffron brought tons of laughs to the show. She was the con-artist girl with many aliases that Malcolm Reynolds accidentally married. Her interactions with Mal and Inara were always priceless. And she was by far my favorite recurring character.
